Mom's house at 1426 Belrose Road, Mayfield Heights, Ohio has many areas for the garden lover. Mom has a cherry tree that we planted years ago near the back of her 215 foot deep wooded lot that includes a variety of maple and pine trees.
Each spring we pick herbs from Mom's herb garden near her kitchen, including sage and lovage that seem to love our Cleveland winters! Lovage is similar to celery and is great in soups. I freeze Mom's sage each year and use it when I make bread stuffing. There is nothing like real herbs in comfort foods.
Mom loves her gardens as much as we do. I enjoy the Forsythia, Lilacs, Rose of Sharon, Rhododendrons, Holly with berries, and her gorgeous Mountain Laurel outside her bedroom window. We have live flowers for holidays and Mom gives pine cones to her neighbors creating arts and crafts. One neighbor gave Mom a beautiful wreath made from the natural materials found in Mom's yard.
I wonder what the secret is to growing large Hydrangeas? I bet it is Mom's green thumb and love of nature. She treats each plant with loving care, nursing the wild flowers like the violets, and the bushes planted through the years.
Last year I counted over 60 smiling daffodils in Mom's backyard.
Mom has a room in the back of her garage devoted to her tools and garden necessities. Before it was Mom's garden center, it was my father's man cave that continues to display his favorite pictures.
